Lassen Gems ~ Part 1

There are more birds at the Lassen Volcanic National Park than I could ever get around to identifying. Everywhere you walk, there are birds twittering high up in the trees. Here are a few that held still enough for me to photograph...
Cassin's Vireo?

Dark-eyed Junco

Yellow-rumped Warbler

And here's a critter that doesn't have wings, but he's cute all the same...

Big Dipper

This shady spot at Lassen Volcanic National Park was the perfect place to spot an American Dipper...
He was having a good ole time bee-bopping along, plunging headfirst into the moving water...

Rain Dance

Mockingbird displays sure are fun to watch...

Seeing Red

We don't have many red birds in California, so every time I see a House Finch I can't help but smile...

Camera Ready

These doves posed for me like they knew exactly which angles were their best!

Little Hummers

We have so many hummingbirds in the backyard that it's practically become a war zone! After looking closer at some photos I snapped the other day, I can see we have more than one species, too--which I couldn't be happier about! (I'm just about to hit 80 on our Big Year list!)

Anna's Hummingbird

Black-chinned Hummingbird

Rufous Hummingbird

We're not even in Baltimore

I'll never get tired of seeing orioles eating from my hummingbird feeders!

Looks like it's time to fill 'em up again!

Trick of the Eye

This mockingbird appears to have purple feathers down his throat...
These photos have NOT been photoshopped or altered in any way, I swear...

Is it simply an optical illusion? Because here is a different mockingbird with no signs of purple anywhere...

Or maybe these are two different birds altogether? Let me know what your theory is--I've been known to misidentify plenty of birds in the past!
